Patty Schnyder - heading for gold on the Gold Coast?

Switzerland's Patty Schnder has advanced to the semi-finals of the Australian women's hardcourt championships after crushing her German opponent, Andrea Glass, on Thursday.

Schnyder, seeded second in the tournament, breezed into the semi-finals by beating Glass 6-1, 6-3.

Her chances of winning the $170,000 Gold Coast tournament rose when the top seed, Conchita Martinez of Spain, was beaten in straight sets (6-2, 6-1) in her quarter-final by the American, Meghann Shaughnessy.

The defending champion, Silvija Talaja, also went out of the tournament, losing 6-3, 6-2 to Silvia Farina of Italy.
