Schnyder takes out Williams
Switzerland's Patty Schnyder has caused a stunning upset, beating world number seven, Serena Williams, in the quarterfinals of the WTA tournament in Charleston.
The 23-year-old from Basel overcame Williams’s intimidating power game in three sets, 2:6, 6:4, 7:5.
Schnyder now faces Australian Open champion, Jennifer Capriati, in the semifinal.
Schnyder, who knocked out France’s Amélie Mauresmo in the second round and former French Open champion, Mary Pierce in the third, had failed to beat Williams in their five previous matches.
