Drones will be used to deliver packages in Switzerland this summer as part of a pilot project by Swiss Post.

Tests are already underway in the United States in a collaboration with Swiss WorldCargo, using drones by California manufacturer MatternetExternal link, a firm primarily focused on developing airborne options for health care in developing countries.

The goal of the pilot project will be to test the potential of the technology, said a Swiss PostExternal link spokesman, confirming a reportExternal link in the SonntagsBlick newspaper.

Mountain deliveries are one possibility under consideration, according to the newpsaper. The range of use will be examined, as well as the legalities inside Switzerland, to help decide if such a service can be envisaged.

With this project, Swiss Post is following in the footsteps of Amazon, which is already considering delivering packages by drone and has received the green light to test delivery flights in the US.
