Informal climate meeting proposed for Geneva

Switzerland is ready to organise an informal meeting of ministers in July to help prepare for the UN climate conference scheduled for the end of the year in Mexico.

Swiss Environment Minister Moritz Leuenberger, who was attending a climate dialogue in Bonn, informed his Mexican counterpart, Juan Rafael Elvira Quesada, of Switzerland’s willingness on Tuesday.

Leuenberger said the meeting in Geneva would focus on the financial aspects of climate protection and speedy financial help for developing countries. These are central questions if confidence is to be restored between rich and poor countries after the Copenhagen climate conference last year.

At the Bonn meeting, which brought together ministers from about 45 countries, Leuenberger re-addressed the importance of the “polluter pays” principle to finance measures to be taken by developing countries adapting to climate change.

The next world climate conference will be held in the Mexican city of Cancun from November 29 to December 11.
