Sion bow to Aarau pressure

During their game against Aarau, Sion were unable to maintain their winning streak Keystone

Sion's unexpectedly strong start to the Swiss football championship has been checked by Aarau, with the team from canton Valais suffering a 1-0 home defeat on Tuesday.

Aarau’s Daniel Tarone scored the only goal of the match after 64 minutes of play.

Sion, who began the season with an impressive 8-1 win over supposed title contenders Basel, were short of ideas against the disciplined Aarau team. The home side had just one good goalscoring opportunity, but Julien Poueys’ strike was well parried by Aarau keeper Ivan Benito.

With their second consecutive victory against Sion, Aarau stand third in the overall rankings, just behind Sion themselves and Zurich. Tuesday’s result confirms Aarau’s progression, which started with a 3-2 win against Lucerne.
