Sion triumph over Xamax to win Swiss Cup

FC Sion have won the Swiss Cup for the twelfth time, beating Neuchâtel Xamax - which recently hit the headlines due to their new Chechen owner - 2-0.

Sion dominated the game on Sunday at Basel’s St Jakob’s Park, with two goals coming in the first six minutes.

The first was scored by Giovanni Sio in the second minute, followed four minutes later by a header by Vilmos Vanczak.

Sion, which have now won every Swiss Cup final it has been in, had always been the favourite against Xamax. Chechen billionaire Bulat Chagaev officially took over the reins of the struggling Neuchâtel club earlier this month.

Last year’s match was won by FC Basel, which routed Lausanne Sport 6-0. Basel retained their Super League title this year.
