The month of July in Switzerland has begun with musical events to suit all tastes. This content was published on July 4, 2000 - 15:30
In Basel, tens of thousands of people lined the streets to watch a procession of bands playing the fifes and drums, and an estimated 77,000 fans of traditional Swiss music attended a yodelling festival at Buochs in Canton Nidwalden.
But not all the music was folkloric. About 22,000 people went to the annual open-air festival in St Gallen, where the performers included Macy Gray, Ziggy Marley and Huey Lewis. And 25,000 traditional jazz fans - a record attendance - were at the town's New Orleans jazz festival.
A blues festival in Neuchatel attracted 7,000 people - fewer than expected. The organisers believe many stayed away because for the first time the public had to pay for admission to the festival.
