The Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka had earlier defeated James Blake of the US, 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 7- 6.

Roddick, a top ten seed, beat the lowly-ranked Chiudinelli 6-1, 6-3, 7-6 in Birmingham, Alabama on Friday.

The Swiss team, without world number two Roger Federer, face a strong American squad in the best-of-five series. Federer, a 13-time Grand Slam winner, is out with a bad back.

Both countries will put doubles teams on the court on Saturday.
