Swiss and US tie in Davis Cup after round one

United States tennis player Andy Roddick has beaten Marco Chiudinelli of Switzerland in straight sets to bring the US level in round one of Davis Cup.

The Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka had earlier defeated James Blake of the US, 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 7- 6.

Roddick, a top ten seed, beat the lowly-ranked Chiudinelli 6-1, 6-3, 7-6 in Birmingham, Alabama on Friday.

The Swiss team, without world number two Roger Federer, face a strong American squad in the best-of-five series. Federer, a 13-time Grand Slam winner, is out with a bad back.

Both countries will put doubles teams on the court on Saturday.
