Swiss celebrate ski successes

Tuesday’s World Cup downhill in Bormio saw more success for Swiss skiers, with Didier Defago coming second and Didier Cuche keeping his overall lead in the discipline.

Carlo Janka recovered the overall World Cup lead from the Austrian Benjamin Raich, who was not competing in the Italian resort.

Defago came in 0.53 seconds behind the winner, Andrej Jerman of Slovenia. The Austrian Mario Scheiber, who finished 0.09 seconds faster than Defago, was disqualified for using irregular boots.

It was Defago’s best result of the season so far.

Cuche came sixth, and two places behind him was Tobias Grünenfelder, whose result was good enough to qualify him for the Swiss Olympic team.

Janka finished 12th, and Ralf Kreuzer 19th – his best ever result.

The men’s World Cup competition resumes on January 6 in Zagreb, in Croatia, with the slalom.
