Swiss Davis cup line-up named

Roger Federer will be part of Switzerland's Davis Cup Team Keystone

The Swiss Davis Cup team coach, Peter Carter, has named a five-strong line-up of Swiss tennis stars for the February showdown against Russia.

Carter, who is Australian, chose Swiss men’s number one, Roger Federer along with Michel Kratochvil, George Bastl, Ivo Heuberger and Marc Rosset.

Unfortunately, Carter will not be able to captain the team in Moscow from 8-10 February, because he’s not a Swiss citizen. Under the competition rules, only a Swiss national can captain the Swiss team.

Instead, one of the five players will sit on the bench to advise and encourage his fellow teammates. Carter will, however, be in the background fulfilling his commitments as coach.

Carter is to receive his full residency papers – the much-vaunted “C” permit — in September 2003. From that time on the way will be cleared for him to captain the Swiss Davis Cup Team.
