Swiss draw against Dutch in friendly

Switzerland’s national football team drew against the Netherlands on Friday evening, 0-0, in a friendly match in Amsterdam.

The strong defensive play of the Swiss was given credit for shutting down big-name Dutch strikers like Robin van Persie and Dirk Kuyt.

Swiss goalkeeper Diego Benaglio came to the rescue on several occasions, blocking several shots.

Switzerland had their own chances to score, Gokhan Inler shooting straight at the Dutch goal from distance and then Fabian Frei volleying over the bar from close range following a corner by Xherdan Shaqiri.

Switzerland failed to qualify for next year’s European championships.

The friendly against the Netherlands was being seen as a first test of the young squad ahead of qualifications for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
