Swiss exhibition celebrates cannabis plant

Hemp products can be sold legally in Switzerland

(Keystone)

An exhibition devoted to the versatile hemp plant has opened its doors to the public in Bern. Some 64 exhibitors from nine countries are taking part in the event, designed to show that hemp is more than just the source of cannabis.

Visitors will be able to sample hemp cheese, a glass of champagne made from plant extracts or try out cosmetics based on the product.

The event, which runs until Saturday evening, also features a fashion show of clothes made from hemp.

But the highlight of the two-day event is expected to be the "Best Joint" competition, which will bring the fair to a close on Saturday night. Twelve candidates have submitted entries, which will be judged by a jury of 650 members of the public.

Co-organiser Marco Kuhn said the exhibition would feature an indoor field of more than 1,000 cannabis plants. But he warned that sachets of cannabis would not be on sale.

"We are not concerned that the police will descend on us," Kuhn said.

Hemp products are sold without restriction in Switzerland.
