It was already clear earlier in the day that the Swiss team would be on its way home after the previous game in its group, in which Norway beat France 5-2.
The elimination was not a surprise: Switzerland’s chances of qualification for the next stage were already dim.
Only if France had beaten Norway in normal time would the Swiss win over the US have pushed them through.
As it was, within four minutes of the beginning of the game France was already down 2-0.
The other quarterfinalists are Canada, the Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Russia, Sweden and the US.
In the 2010 championship Switzerland finished fifth.

The year started – as it usually does – with Roger Federer winning the Australian Open. His straight-sets defeat of Andy Murray wasn’t as memorable as last year’s five-set final against Rafael Nadal (which Federer lost), but it extended his record to 16 grand slam titles – four of them down under. “I can cry…

Face protection has been compulsory for goalkeepers for years. The first mask appeared in North America at the end of the 1950s in the professional leagues. Since then they have evolved, changing shape and often sporting artwork. (All pictures: www.hockeymasks.com)
