Swiss favour a family affair

The perfect family unit Keystone

The Swiss think the ideal family unit consists of a mum, dad and two kids, according to a study published on Wednesday.

The survey revealed that the desire to get married remains strong in Switzerland, despite an increase in the divorce rate.

But the study, carried out in September by the GfS polling institute in Zurich, also showed that the idea of couples living together out of wedlock was growing in popularity.

Almost three-quarters of the 718 people questioned said they did not have a problem with people “living in sin” – almost double the figure 20 years ago.

And half of those surveyed said they approved of singles – a marked change in public opinion.

Two’s company

Regarding the perfect family size, a mum, dad and two small mouths to feed is still the popular choice. Bigger families got the thumbs down.

But the number of people happy to settle for one little Luca or Lea has more than doubled in recent years.

And a third now believe that there is nothing wrong with saying “no” to a life of nappies, sleepless nights and temper tantrums.

The survey also noted a shift in the balance of power between the sexes.

More Swiss now believe that tasks should be shared equally, rather than the woman shouldering the burden of running a household.

However, the authors of the study noted that each generation had a different take on this issue.
