Switzerland is the guest of honour at the international festival of French-language films which begins this week at Namur in Belgium.

Over 20 classic and more recently-made Swiss films, will be screened at the festival and two of them are entered for the official competition for full-length features.

The Geneva director, Nicolas Wadimoff, is submitting "Mondialito" - which was released last week - in a bid to repeat his success with his first film "Clandestins", which won him the top award at Namur three years ago.

The other Swiss entry is "Azzuro" directed by Denis Rabaglia from canton Valais.

Other films in the competition are from France, Belgium, Quebec, Morocco, Mali and Vietnam.

Switzerland will be represented in the competition for short films by Rafael Wolf's "Sans fin", and in the documentary category by Denise Gilliand's "Les Bas-fonds" and "Delphine Syrig, portrait d'une comète" by Jacqueline Veuve.

Classic French-language Swiss movies from the 1970s - including Alain Tanner's "La Salamandre" will also be featured in a retrospective.

The director, writer and journalist Anne Cunéo is the Swiss representative on the jury, whose president is the Belgian film-maker, Andrée Corbiau.
