Swiss horse riders awarded special honours

Markus Fuchs and Willi Melliger have received the Golden Needle Award from the Swiss Equestrian Federation. They were given their awards for top performances in their field at the Gründenmoos stadium in St-Gallen.

Fuchs received the prize for his victory at this year's world-cup final in Göteborg. His compatriot, Melliger, who finished fourth in that event, was crowned most successful Swiss championship eventer of all time.

The awards were given on Saturday at Switzerland's round of the Official Horse Jumping Competition (CSIO). The Swiss event is aimed at selecting participants for the Arnhem European Championships taking place from June 28 to July 1 in the Netherlands.

CSIO is the body which hosts numerous national and international challenges, as well as awarding many prizes. CSIO competitions count towards the world rankings of horse riders and their teams.

Switzerland's CSIOs take place every year alternatively in St-Gallen and Lucern.
