Switzerland's largest telecommunications company, Swisscom, has linked up with the United States e-commerce firm, Commerce One, to launch a new online marketplace. Swisscom will try to ensure the success of the new venture by becoming its first customer.

The new electronic marketplace will be based on one of Commerce One's existing products, and operated by Swisscom.

Swisscom says its aim will be to provide secure, rapid transactions using the Internet to keep costs low and simplify the process of buying and selling.

The new online marketplace will also provide buyers and sellers with access to other electronic markets, operated by companies in sectors such as banking, insurance and the motor industry.

To get the venture off to a good start, Swisscom's purchasing department will become its first customer.
