Switzerland tie Bulgaria in football friendly
Switzerland have scored a 1-1 draw with Bulgaria in a friendly football match in Geneva that left 9,500 spectators with little to celebrate.
The national side appeared hesitant, even cautious, during the only friendly before the world championship qualifier against Moldova next month.
Benjamin Huggel scored the equaliser for Switzerland seconds before half time, saving the Swiss from defeat.
“It would have been nice if we’d won,” said forward Hakan Yakin. “In March against Moldova we must be ready.”
Despite the disappointing performance, coach Ottmar Hitzfeld said he was not unhappy with the team and that he wanted a tough match before the qualifiers.
“The pace of the match was quicker than in November against Finland,” he said. “The Bulgarians were snappy and aggressive.”
