Tennis: Kratochvil qualifies for French Open·

The Swiss tennis player Michel Kratochvil has qualified for the French Open after winning three preliminary round matches.

The 20-year-old from Berne saw off Belgium’s Olivier Rochus with ease (6-2, 6-1) in the last of the three games to join compatriots Marc Rosset, Roger Federer and George Bastl in the first round proper. It will be Kratochvil’s first appearance in a Grand Slam tournament.

In the women’s draw all eyes will be on Switzerland’s Martina Hingis, as she attempts to win the only Grand Slam prize that has so far eluded her. Hingis will be joined by three other Swiss women at Roland Garros. Two of them, Patty Schnyder and Emmanuelle Gagliardi, have been drawn against each other – which at least guarantees Swiss interest in the second round. Miroslava Vavrinec completes the quartet.·
