On Thursday, Stanislas Wawrinka (ATP 21) and Marco Chiudinelli (73) both won their matches to join Roger Federer in the final eight.

Wawrinka defeated Jarkko Nieminen (125) of Finland, 7-5, 2-6, 6-1, while wild card Chiudinelli beat compatriot Michael Lammer (167), 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Wawrinka will have his work cut out for him as he faces world number three Novak Djokovic on Friday. Chiudinelli will go up against Richard Gasquet of France (57), while Federer will take on Russian qualifier Evgeny Korolev.

The only previous time so many Swiss advanced to the quarters of an ATP tournament was also in Basel eight years ago when it was accomplished by Federer, George Bastl and Michel Kratochvil.
