According to a performance index compiled by the economics research group BAK Basel, the city of Lucerne takes top spot for tourists during the summer months.
It enjoys an increasing number of overnight stays, has many points of attraction nearby and can take advantage of its location on Lake Lucerne.
Zermatt maintains its second position in the overall rankings because it has managed to fill its tourist accommodation for years during both the summer and winter seasons.
Lucerne comes fourth, while the village of Engelberg comes in sixth.
However flattering the picture may seem for the Swiss, the Austrians have done even better, according to the index.
The most successful destination all year round is the Grossarital in the Salzburg region, and Austrian resorts dominate the rankings in the winter months with Lech-Zürs leading the way.
