Two speed flyers killed in two days

Two men have been killed in separate speed flying accidents in the Swiss Alps. The new winter sport is a combination of paragliding and skiing.

The first accident, which claimed the life of a 23-year-old enthusiast, happened in the Titlis region near Engleberg on Friday. A 36-year-old speed flyer was killed on the Diablerets glacier in western Switzerland on Saturday.

Following several serious accidents, since last year those wishing to practise the sport have to complete special training and hold a certificate from the Swiss Free Flying Association, as well as a paragliding licence.

Speed flyers can reach speeds of up to 120 kilometres per hour on their descent. The sport emerged from France and has become popular in Switzerland in recent years.
