The UBS group, through its investment banking division Warburg Dillon Read, has signed an agreement with the British telecommunications company, Vodafone AirTouch, to co-operate in the electronic distribution of investment information.

A statement said that Vodafone AirTouch, with its mobile communications network, would allow Warburg Dillon Read, as a content provider, to supply value-added information to both existing and potentially a very large group of new clients through various technologies, including SMS (Short Message Service).

“Our aim is to enlarge our customer base and improve levels of service with our existing clients globally,” said James Tregear, Global Head of Equities Distribution at Warburg Dillon Read.

The statement added that the development of the WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) and the GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) technologies would eventually enable providers to disseminate text files and graphics.

Applications currently being engineered will eventually allow Warburg Dillon Read to send audio and video files to clients.

It is planned that this service will be offered around the world, with initial testing in Britain.

Switzerland’s largest telecommunications operator, Swisscom, announced on Tuesday that it would be introducing WAP technology, bringing the Internet to the mobile phone, on February 21.
