The first ascent of the Eiger remains a minor anecdote in the annals of mountaineering history when compared to the conquest of the Eiger North Face 80 years later.

After most of the first ascents of alpine peaks had been made in the 19th century, mountaineers trained their sites on finding more difficult routes to the top. The ultimate challenge is still considered by many to be the Eiger North Face.
