Wawrinka and Schnyder clear first hurdle

Swiss tennis players Stanislas Wawrinka and Patty Schnyder have successfully negotiated their first-round matches at the Australian Open.

On Monday Schnyder, Switzerland’s top-ranked female competitor, dominated American Lilia Osterloh 6-3, 6-3. The 15th seed now faces Australia’s Casey Dellacqua, whom she has never played.

Wawrinka, the Swiss number two behind Roger Federer, overcame Frenchman Julien Benneteau in three sets, 6-3, 6-3, 6-3, serving 14 aces.

His next match will be against another French player, Marc Gicquel.

In addition the Swiss qualifier Timea Bacsinszky defeated Australian Sophie Ferguson 6-4, 6-3.

World number one Federer plays his first game against Argentina’s Diego Hartfield on Tuesday.
