Wretched season continues for Rosset

Marc Rosset has been defeated by Russia's Marat Safin in the second round of the $550,000 Tashkent hardcourt tennis tournament in Uzbekistan.

Rosset lost in straight sets against his doubles partner, 6-4, 7-6. The Russian world number seven took the game after an average performance.

“Marc played well, but became nervous during the first tie-break,” said Marat after the match. “He made too many mistakes after that.”

Switzerland’s number three player, who has sunk to 100th in the world rankings, has been unable to make the third round of any of the 21 tournaments he has taken part in so far this season.

Rosset defeated Marat in 1999, but subsequently lost three other matches against the US Open semi-finalist.
