Zermatt scores high for transport offer

Zermatt and Saas Fee have been named by a leading environmental organisation the most ecological Swiss mountain resorts in terms of transport.

The Transport and Environment Association rated 14 resorts using criteria such as accessibility with public transport and quality of bus services in the villages.

Zermatt and Saas Fee scored well for having good rail (Zermatt) and bus (Saas Fee) connections, good bus services in the villages and a proactive communications policy promoting public transport.

The two resorts in canton Valais are car-free and have large car parks on their outskirts.

In publishing the rankings on Monday, the association also had praise for other resorts. It said, for example, that all hotel guests in Davos and Grindelwald can ride local buses free of charge.

The Lower Engadine resort of Scuol has begun offering “Holidays Without Your Car” packages. Included is free use of the public transport network, separate transport of luggage and hire of electric bicycles.
