Zurich airport passenger numbers plummet in 2001

The Swissair debacle and the terrorist attacks on New York had a dramatic impact on the number of people visiting Zurich's Kloten airport last year.

According to airport authorities, the total number of passengers travelling through Kloten in 2001 was 21 million, 7.4 per cent less than the previous year.

The number of aircraft take-offs and landings was also down by 5 per cent, to 309, 250.

The figures were in line with estimates, said the authorities, despite a strong start to the year, which saw passenger numbers rise by 6 per cent in the first quarter of 2001.

However, the grounding of the Swissair fleet and the attacks of September 11 provoked a 40 per cent decline in passenger numbers in October and November.

Flights operated by Crossair, Lufthansa and SAS increased the most in 2001.
