The Swissair debacle and the terrorist attacks on New York had a dramatic impact on the number of people visiting Zurich's Kloten airport last year. This content was published on January 21, 2002 - 10:33
According to airport authorities, the total number of passengers travelling through Kloten in 2001 was 21 million, 7.4 per cent less than the previous year.
The number of aircraft take-offs and landings was also down by 5 per cent, to 309, 250.
The figures were in line with estimates, said the authorities, despite a strong start to the year, which saw passenger numbers rise by 6 per cent in the first quarter of 2001.
However, the grounding of the Swissair fleet and the attacks of September 11 provoked a 40 per cent decline in passenger numbers in October and November.
Flights operated by Crossair, Lufthansa and SAS increased the most in 2001.
