Zurich professor honoured with top science prize
Dieter Seebach, a German organic chemistry professor at Zurich's Federal Institute of Technology, has been awarded one of Switzerland's most prestigious science prizes.
Seebach has been honoured with the Marcel Benoist Prize for his work on the synthesis of organic substances.
Born in 1937 in Karlsruhe, Germany, Seebach spent most of his early career in his homeland. He also spent some time in the laboratory of Harvard Nobel prize-winner E.J. Corey.
Seebach’s association with the Federal Institute of Technology began in 1977, when he took on a professor’s position there.
The author of over 600 scientific papers, Seebach is the inventor of numerous methods for synthesizing organic substances closely related to natural ones. He also created synthesis methods used today by the chemical, pharmaceutical and agrochemical industries.
The prize is worth SFr100,000.
