Capitolio

A photo essay of the city of Caracas by Magnum photographer Christopher Anderson.

“I sometimes imagine Caracas as a living breathing animal. Obscured by the darkness it appears both violent and sensual, but perhaps it’s true nature will only be revealed at the moment it devours me.” – Christopher Anderson

The word ‘capitolio’ refers to the domed building that houses a government. In photographer Chris Anderson’s essay, the city of Caracas and Venezuela itself become a metaphorical ‘capitolio’.

These images were taken during the 2006 presidential elections. On October 7, 2012, Venezuelans will again cast their vote. (All images by Chris Anderson/Magnum)
