Swiss freeze further Syrian funds

Switzerland has blocked another SFr18 million ($20.4 million) belonging to the Syrian regime, as the crackdown against anti-government protesters continues.

The sum of blocked assets now totals SFr45 million.

In May the Swiss government announced sanctions against Syria, including a freeze on any assets held in Swiss banks by 13 members of the Syrian regime. Since then, sanctions have been extended to 34 individuals and four companies.

It remains to be decided whether Bern will join the oil embargo against Damascus recently agreed by the European Union.

On Monday activists said Syrian troops had conducted deadly raids in central Syria as the United Nations said the death toll from six months of unrest had reached at least 2,600.
