Swiss Solidarity, the fundraising arm of the Swiss media, says it has already raised more than SFr1 million ($600,000) for Afghan civilians.

The funds are being used to finance emergency relief work carried out by several partner charities, including the Swiss Red Cross, Caritas, Swiss Interchurch Aid, Terre des Hommes Lausanne, Médecins sans Frontières and MedAir.

According to Swiss Solidarity, more than 300,000 people have already benefited from relief operations.

Swiss Solidarity, which launched its Afghanistan appeal on November 22, says it needs to ensure supplies of medicines, food, blankets, tents and kitchen equipment arrive in the war-torn country before the onset of winter.
