Switzerland's biggest private aid organisation, Helvetas, received a record SFr14.9 million ($12.9 million) in donations in 2008, up 23 per cent on 2007.

Announcing the figures on Thursday, Helvetas said its “Toilets for All” campaign had inspired many donors. The campaign to mark Sanitation Year highlighted the fact that 2.6 billion people in the world do not have access to basic sanitation.
In 2008 the organisation helped provide 250,000 people with access to clean water, and improved the sanitary conditions for nearly half a million in 11 countries.
Helvetas’s money comes not only from private individuals, but also from private foundations, enterprises and the cantons and communes.
