Organisers expect over 150 boats to flood Swiss lakes on Navigation Day Keystone Archive

Boat lovers throughout Switzerland took to the lakes on Sunday as the country marked the annual Navigation Day.

Around 150 boats operated by 15 companies took to the water to celebrate the beauty of Swiss lakes. The organisers promised the experience of a lifetime. Visitors were also able to choose a romantic voyage on a traditional paddle steamer, or bask in the luxury of a modern cruise boat.

Horrors

As a prelude to the festivities, a special themed horror evening, or “Schreckenmümpflinacht”, was organised on Saturday.

It took place on five lakes simultaneously: Biel, Constance, Thun, Zurich and Zug. Revellers were be treated to the “fright of their life” as, on the dot of 7.15pm, the “Schreckenmümpfli” took over. Celebrities from the world of Swiss film and theatre provided the “gruesome” entertainment, as the passengers sat back and enjoy a four-course meal to the accompaniment of piano music.

Those who couldn’t make it to the lakes were able follow the proceedings live on radio DRS 1.
