Cabinet undecided on European policy

Following another special meeting, the Swiss cabinet continues to consider its strategy for dealing with the European Union.

After listening to the input of four federal government experts on Thursday, the ministers have decided to solicit the input of two external advisors.

These two experts will look into the interpretation of the bilateral agreements between Switzerland and the EU – as well as the monitoring of their implementation.

Previous discussions plus these commissioned studies will form the basis of the cabinet’s decisions on Switzerland’s continued cooperation with the EU.

Although located in the middle of Europe, Switzerland is not a member of the EU. Switzerland signed a series of major bilateral treaties with the EU over the past decade.

Foreign Minister Micheline Calmy-Rey has recently called for a third round of bilateral negotiations.
