Cases of suspected flu virus fall
The number of people undergoing tests in Switzerland for the deadly influenza A virus, H1N1, has fallen from 26 to 19, according to figures released on Wednesday.
The Federal Health Office said of the 73 cases now registered in the country as suspect, 53 have been cleared and one confirmed. The 19-year-old who tested positive for the virus behind “swine flu” was treated with the antiviral drug Tamiflu.
The remaining cases are in the cantons of Aargau, Bern, Basel Country, Geneva, St Gallen, Solothurn, Vaud and Zurich.
In a related development, the Swiss government has issued a statement outlining measures the authorities have taken to prevent a pandemic in Switzerland.
The government said there had been daily news conferences with updates of the health situation. Information with health recommendations has been posted on the Internet and on flyers distributed to passengers at airports in Basel, Geneva and Zurich.
Authorities also noted that a plan in the event of a pandemic has been regularly brought up to date.
