Glacier Express driver guilty of negligence, homicide

The driver of the Glacier Express which derailed in July last year killing one person has been given a conditional fine of SFr15,000 ($16,200).

The man, convicted of homicide and negligently causing injury, was also ordered to pay SFr500.

Besides the Japanese woman who died, more than 40 people were injured in the derailment of the popular tourist train on July 23.

The train was going 20km/h above the 35km/h speed limit when the accident occurred.

Investigations into the crash found he had sped up too early, not waiting until the whole train had crossed the line marking the end of the 35km/h track and the start of the 55km/h track.
