Overnight stays decline in the first half

The number of overnight stays in Swiss hotels fell by 0.2 per cent in the first six months of 2011 to 17.4 million, according to the Federal Statistics Office.

Those coming from abroad dropped to 9.9 million, down 0.9 per cent compared with the year before.

However, the statistics office said the impact of the strong Swiss franc had for the time being had a limited effect.

In a statement on Friday, it said the number of overnight stays had increased by 2.8 per cent in June to 3.3 million.

Demand from abroad rose by 0.4 per cent in June compared with last year to reach 1.9 million overnight stays.
