The Swiss PET Recycling association said this was a three per cent rise on 2008, despite an additional 32 million bottles going into circulation during the year.

Switzerland has a national target to recycle 75 per cent of PET bottles. In 2006 the rate of recycling was 76 per cent.

PET Recycling said Swiss recycling efforts last year had reduced the amount of greenhouse gases emitted by 139,000 tonnes.

PET is a raw material used for making packaging materials such as bottles and containers. It is one of the most common consumer plastics used.
