Plane crash blamed on human error

Investigations into the crash of a German Tornado fighter jet in the Bernese Alps last April have shown pilot error was to blame.

The two-seater aircraft crashed into a valley near Lauterbrunnen, killing the pilot and seriously injuring the navigator. The plane had been returning to Germany after a training mission.

Both Swiss military investigators as well as the German air force’s flight safety service concluded that the crew did not sufficiently take into account the nature of the terrain they were flying over and their flight parameters.

However no air security rules were contravened according to the investigators.

Since the accident, the Swiss air force has reviewed its assistance procedure for foreign military flight crews.
