Swiss food industry benefits from increase in consumption
The Swiss food industry reaped the benefits of an increase in consumption with most sectors showing better sales figures last year.
Chocolate manufacturers saw their sales grow by more than five per cent last year, according to the Federation for the Swiss Food Industry. Ice-cream producers also had a good year with sales up 6.4 per cent.
More than 80 per cent of the Federation’s members posted an increase in turnover, which is being put down to increased consumption in the domestic market as well as a resurgent tourist industry. Food sales rose 2.9 per cent last year to more than SFr10 billion ($5.5 billion).
Not all sectors of the food industry profited, however. The biscuit industry saw a slight fall in sales, as did producers of soups, sauces and cheese for fondue.
