Farmers have been holding celebrations in 34 towns across Switzerland to promote national milk day. The event was organised by the Swiss milk producers’ association to promote their product and provide information on milk production in Switzerland.

Passersby were offered glasses of milk and fruity milkshakes.

The Swiss milk producers’ association said there were 40,000 farms in Switzerland and, on average, one third of their income came from milk sales.

The farmers are aiming to promote the purity of their product, stressing that cows would not be fed feed that contained genetically modified organisms.

In an earlier promotion drive for the dairy industry and farmers, the Swiss president, Adolf Ogi, called on people to drink milk regularly. He said milk was a key component of modern nutrition.
