Mass executions in Iran condemned

The Swiss foreign ministry has condemned the executions of some 20 people in Iran last weekend.

“In the framework of its human rights dialogue with Iran, the foreign ministry has regularly protested against the use of the death penalty in Iran,” it said in a statement.

The government called on the Iranians to abolish the death penalty and all forms of corporal punishment.

Iranian media reported that the condemned were all men, aged 35-48, who were hanged on drug trafficking charges.

Swiss news services put the total number of people executed in Iran at 161 so far this year. The figures are based on press reports.
