Swiss send condolences over India air crash

Transport Minister Moritz Leuenberger has sent a letter of condolence to his Indian counterpart following a plane accident in southern India.

A passenger jet crashed on landing at the city of Mangalore in the early hours of Saturday, killing almost 160 people.

In a statement, the transport ministry said that Leuenberger had written to express his sadness at the deaths and his sympathies to the families of the victims.

Air India Express said there were eight survivors among the 160 passengers and six crew on board its Boeing 737 arriving from Dubai. Most of the victims were Indian citizens.

The plane overshot the hilltop runway as it tried to land and burst into flames in a forested valley beyond.
