Switzerland rated the 16th most peaceful nation

Switzerland is the 16th most peaceful country in the world, according to the annual report from the Institute for Economics and Peace, a global non-profit research organisation.

Iceland is apparently the most peaceful nation, followed by New Zealand, Japan, Denmark and the Czech Republic. The least peaceful nations are Somalia, Iraq, Sudan, Afghanistan and North Korea.

The annual Global Peace Index, published on Thursday, says levels of world peace have dropped for the third consecutive year.

It attributes the drop in world peace to increased violence and the threat of terrorism in the Mideast and North Africa. Libya tumbled 83 spots in the rankings, to 143.

While the United Nations was not involved in the research, the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs sponsored its presentation at the world body’s headquarters.
