UN seeks Switzerland’s help in Iraq
The United Nations has asked Switzerland to send a team of experts to Iraq to provide logistical support for the organisation's mission in Baghdad.
The federal government is expected to respond to the request within the next few days.
Switzerland has already sent two contingents of infrastructure specialists to Iraq to help restore the headquarters of UN weapon’s inspectors.
In an interview with the French-language newspaper “dimanche.ch”, Christophe Keckeis, the deputy commander of the Swiss Air Force, said he was in favour of another deployment.
“They [the team] want to go and I am sure we’ll be able to get them back in case of a war,” he told the newspaper.
The government is expected to make a quick decision and, according to Roman Weissen, spokesman for the defence ministry, it will depend on the development of the Iraq crisis.
