Rail service normalises after bomb threat

Police cordoned off Stadelhofen station Keystone

All commuter trains in Zurich were put back in service on Wednesday evening after a bomb alert paralysed the network for about three hours.

Police cordoned off a commuter station in the city centre and ordered the stoppage of seven rail lines after receiving a bomb threat.

The police said they received an anonymous fax containing the threat shortly before 3pm, and soon afterwards received a report of a man acting suspiciously at Stadelhofen station.

The suspect was seen entering the train tunnel with a backpack and then exiting without it.

The police reopened the station at 6.20pm after finding nothing suspicious.

A 46-year-old Swiss man was taken in for questioning.

The Swiss Federal Railways said the closure of the seven lines caused lengthy delays on Zurich’s entire commuter network during rush hour.
