Ivory Coast travel advisory issued

The Swiss foreign ministry is advising Swiss not to travel to the Ivory Coast due to the political crisis in the west African nation.

On December 2, the army closed all border crossings, the Swiss foreign ministry said on its website.

Unrest is feared in the country after the presidential candidates, the incumbent Laurent Gbagbo, and his opponent Alassane Ouattara, both declared themselves victorious in a run-off election.

Ouattara was initially announced as the winner but the result was overturned by Gbagbo. Several countries including the United States and the United Nations support Ouattara’s claim.

Swiss citizens who are currently in Ivory Coast are advised to inform the Swiss embassy in Abidjan of their whereabouts.

The embassy can be contacted at the following telephone numbers: +225 20 21 17 21 and +225 07 83 06 55.
