Hotel hot beds

A positive summer season for Swiss tourism

Swiss hotels welcomed more guests through their doors in the summer than the previous year. The latest figures from the Federal Office of Statistics show an increase of more than 3% in overnight stays between May and October.

The businesses tallied up 20 million nights spent at their premises. Swiss holidaymakers stayed 1.2% more nights in hotel beds than they did in 2012, for foreign tourists the same figure was 5%.

As in recent years, Switzerland proved particularly popular with the Chinese. They slept an extra 112,000 nights in the country, an increase of 22% and the largest among all other countries.

Visitors from Asia in general booked in for 11% more overnight stays this summer than in the previous year.

August proved to be the most popular month to take a break in Switzerland.
