Scholarships for international students in Switzerland

While university fees are quite modest (ranging from CHF1,300 to CHF8,000 a year for international students), living expenses can be quite substantial (universities recommend setting aside between CHF18,000 and CHF28,000 depending on location and needs).

International students can apply for the Swiss Government Excellence ScholarshipsExternal link to complete a PhD, postdoc or carry out research. This usually includes a monthly stipend, fee waiver, mandatory health insurance and airfare.

The two Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology in Lausanne and Zurich (EPFLExternal link and ETHZExternal link respectively) and the University of GenevaExternal link also offer “Excellence” scholarships for masters programmes that cover study and living costs.

Women from conflict-affected countries can apply for a scholarship from the Spark of HopeExternal link foundation. Those who speak two of Switzerland’s national languages can apply for scholarships from the Swiss Study FoundationExternal link
